The Teacher LEARN (Locating, Excavation, Analyzing, Rebuilding, Networking) Archaeology program is a long-term partnership between Montpelier Archaeology and Archaeology in the Community (AITC).
Participating teachers excavate on James and Dolley Madison's historic property and learn how to apply their experiences to the classroom with Alexandra Jones of AITC. The Teacher LEARN Archaeology program is uniquely designed to provide teachers with hands-on experience, professional development, and lesson plans for teaching archaeological science and heritage to K-12 students. The one-week training introduces educators to an important site of Virginia’s history and helps them to develop the tools to tackle difficult topics of slavery and racism in the classroom. Teachers leave the program with an understanding of archaeological excavation and lab processes and a wealth of knowledge on how to apply these concepts to a variety of different subjects and grade levels. By the end of the week, teachers have lesson plans in hand and a unique experience to share with their students and colleagues.
AITC provides scholarships for up to 15 teachers to attend the Teacher LEARN Archaeology program, covering fees, lodging, and two meals. Travel and other meals for the week are the responsibility of the participant.
