DC Archaeology Month
Many states in the United States hold an archaeology month or week, celebrating local heritage. For the first time DC celebrated an archaeology month in June 2024. Read the announcement from DC Mayor Bowser officially proclaiming June 2024 DC Archaeology Month. If you are an educator in Washington, DC, you can receive a free poster (pictured left) for your classroom and free postcards for your students to participate in our Message to an Archaeologist program. Contact us for more information.
The poster and postcard artwork was designed by Ambria Safford for her internship with Archaeology in the Community. The design highlights the archaeology of Kalorama Park in DC, which is part of the National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. AITC has created a free lesson plan about Kalorama Park for grades 3 and 5. The first DC Archaeology Month was possible through support from the Argosy Foundation, the ANC1C, and the DC Historic Preservation Office. |
